Scones with Dark Cherries & Dark Chocolate Chips

I saw so lovely dark cherries at the market and they were very sweet and tasty.  After enjoying some for a sweet snack the next morning they were staring at me when I open the refrigerator.  No I should say they were screaming at me as I thought cherries chocolate cherries chocolate!  We need to have scones chocolate cherry or cherry chocolate how every you say it they turned out great.  With jammy cherries and rich dark chocolate they were hard to resist.  So I didn’t,  resist that is with a cup of coffee they made a wonderfully delicious breakfast treat.

  • 2 cup self rising flour
  • 1 stick unsalted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 cup sugar (I used sugar in the raw)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup fresh cherries pitted and sliced in half
  • 1 cup dark bitter-sweet chocolate chips

In a small measuring cup or bowl whip egg into cream and set aside.  In a large bowl stir together flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt and sugar mix well.  Cut the butter in to small cubes then with a pasty blender cut the butter into the flour until it resembles coarse meal.  Stir in the cherries and chocolate chips. Stir in the cream just until the flour is wet then pour onto a floured surface and knead about 6 to 8 time.  Shape the dough into a circle and flatten to about 1 inch thick.  Cut the circle into th’s bake at 400° for 16 to 20 minutes depending on your oven or until golden.
